Selections

Our Policy on Selections:

The Labour Movement for Europe has put out an open call for those who share our values and vision of a close working relationship with Europe to put themselves forward for selection as Labour candidates at the next election. With the assistance of members of the Labour Movement for Europe in the relevant constituency through holding an indicative ballot, the LME will make nominations for those constituencies where we are affiliated and endorsements for those constituencies where we have active memberships on a case by case basis.

Please note decisions on both nominations and endorsements can be withdrawn at the discretion of the LME Executive, and the LME Executive reserves the right to introduce procedures to ensure a diverse range of candidates are selected for nomination and endorsement.

Information for Candidates in England and Wales: 

The process for consideration for either nominations or endorsements as a Labour Movement for Europe candidate, is as follows:

  1. You must be a fully paid up member of the Labour Movement for Europe on the day of the meeting to be able to be considered for nomination or endorsement as a candidate.
  2. You must also be eligible to be a Labour candidate at the next general election and agree to abide by all the rules and requirements to be a candidate determined by the Labour party.
  3. To notify us of your intent, you may submit a statement of upto 500 words setting out how you have acted to uphold and promote the values and vision of the LME and which CLP you are seeking support as well as confirming you will adhere to point two above. This must be accompanied by names of two members of the LME eligible to participate in the meeting and willing to propose you for consideration at the meeting.
  4. The LME will circulate details of all nomination and endorsement meeting dates and a contact for applying to them via our social media.
  5. If an application is received at least 24 hours before the meeting of members of the LME to consider a nomination or endorsement, it will be shared by the LME with all those eligible to participate in the meeting and you will be invited to participate in the meeting with members of the LME which will be held online.
  6. All candidates who wish to stand, have provided a statement as to how they will uphold and promote the values and vision of the LME and have notified the LME of this at least 24 hours before the meeting will be notified to eligible voters. These individuals will also be invited to attend the meeting and seek support in person. 
  7. Candidates who attend will be asked to present to the meeting for no more than three minutes each why they should be chosen by the meeting as the LME candidate. Members will then be given a maximum of ten minutes per candidate to ask questions. If a candidate is also a resident of the CLP they cannot participate in the questioning of other candidates and must absent themselves from the meeting.
  8. At the end of this process, an indicative ballot will be taken as to who to propose as the LME candidate in this constituency. Candidates require two members of the LME eligible to participate in this meeting to propose and second them as a candidate- these individuals cannot be candidates themselves. The outcome of this vote will then be used by the LME Executive to inform their decision on this matter. Any decision made by the Exec using the outcome of this indicative ballot process is not open to appeal. All members of the LME in the constituency will then be notified of the result and the LME will publicise their decision in a timely fashion.

 

Information for Candidates in Scotland 

In Scotland where seats are 'twinned' for selections, the LME will hold hustings involving members in both constituencies.
  1. You must be a fully paid up member of the Labour Movement for Europe on the day of the meeting to be able to be considered for nomination or endorsement as a candidate.
  2. You must also be eligible to be a Labour candidate at the next general election and agree to abide by all the rules and requirements to be a candidate determined by the Labour party.
  3. These individuals will also be invited to attend the meeting and seek support in person. 
  7. Candidates who attend will be asked to present to the meeting for no more than three minutes each why they should be chosen by the meeting as an LME candidate. Members will then be given a maximum of ten minutes per candidate to ask questions. No candidate may participate in the questioning of another candidate and all candidates will be asked to leave the meeting once the hustings has finished.
  8. At the end of this process, an indicative ballot will be taken. Candidates require two members of the LME eligible to participate in this meeting to propose and second them as a candidate- these individuals cannot be candidates themselves.
  9. At each meeting which involves a twinned constituency, at least one woman must be nominated. 
  10. The person who then secures the most support amongst all attendees can decide if they wish to indicate which of the two CLPs they wish to prioritise for nomination or if they wish to be considered by both constituencies.  
  11. The meeting may also nominate a person from a black or ethnic minority background if neither of the two proposed candidates are. 
  12. Any decision made by the Exec using the outcome of this indicative ballot process is not open to appeal. All members of the LME in both constituencies will then be notified of the result and the LME will publicise their decision in a timely fashion.

 

Information for Members in England and Wales 

In every constituency a meeting will be held in a timely manner to hold an indicative ballot on this issue to inform the decision of the LME Executive as to who to propose to the Labour Party.

Please note the LME executive reserve the right to provide guidance on requirements for candidates for consideration including twinning selection processes to ensure a diversity of candidates are put forward by the LME for selection.  Meetings to make endorsements for those constituencies where the LME is not affiliated may also be held at the discretion of the LME Executive.

The process for this meeting will be as follows:

  1. Anyone who is a fully paid up member of the Labour Movement for Europe at least 24 hours before the meeting and resident in the relevant constituency may participate in the indicative ballot. Once the Labour Party sets out a timetable for a selection process, all those who are eligible to participate will be notified of a meeting which will be held online via zoom to conduct a indicative ballot to inform the decision of the LME Executive as to who to propose. This meeting will be held in a timely fashion to ensure any such nomination or endorsement will be made in time for the process and to assist constituencies in decision making on this matter.
  4. At the start of the meeting, the eligibility of all participants to take part will be verified, and those who are not eligible will be asked to leave. Once the meeting begins no one else may be admitted except for candidates seeking to address the meeting.
  5. The meeting will be overseen by a member of the LME Executive who is not a member of the constituency.
  6. All candidates who wish to stand, have provided a statement as to how they will uphold and promote the values and vision of the LME and have been proposed by at least two members of the LME in the relevant constituency who are eligible to take part in the meeting at least 24 hours before the meeting will be notified to eligible voters. These individuals will also be invited to attend the meeting and seek support in person.
  7. Candidates who attend will be asked to present to the meeting for no more than three minutes each why they should be chosen by the meeting as the LME candidate. Members will then be given a maximum of eight minutes per candidate to ask questions. If a candidate is also a resident of the CLP they cannot participate in the questioning of other candidates and must absent themselves from the meeting.
  8. At the end of this process an indicative ballot will be taken as to who to propose as the LME candidate in this constituency.   9. Participation in the meeting for all members and candidates is at the discretion of the LME Executive who reserve the right to remove anyone from participation whose conduct is not conducive to a fair and respectful process.

 

Information for Members in Scotland

Delegates

Become an LME Delegate in your local CLP

If your local Labour Party operates a delegate structure, where branches and affiliated organisations appoint delegates, then only those delegates are entitled to vote at the meetings. This includes taking part in debates and votes on motions, choosing and standing as Labour conference delegates and any other local business decisions for your local Labour Party.  The Labour Movement for Europe is affiliated to over half of all CLPs. That means we can send up to five delegates to a local Labour Party who can take on this role.
